Deputy Foreign Minister Akuei Bona Malual Embarks on Diplomatic Mission to Reshape South Sudan’s Global Engagement

Newly appointed Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon. Akuei Bona Malual, has begun executing President Salva Kiir Mayardit’s directive to recalibrate South Sudan’s international relations, holding a series of high-level meetings with foreign diplomats in Juba.

Juba, South Sudan – May 11, 2025

Tasked with reshaping the country’s global engagement strategy, Hon. Malual is prioritizing bilateral diplomacy to secure strategic partnerships and elevate South Sudan’s standing on the world stage.

Sources within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that the Deputy Minister has so far met with envoys from regional neighbors, the African Union, the European Union, and several Western and Asian countries. Discussions are said to focus on economic cooperation, peace implementation, and increased foreign investment in key sectors such as energy, agriculture, and infrastructure.

“This new phase of diplomacy is anchored in mutual respect and shared interest,” said a senior official at the ministry. “The Deputy Minister is reaffirming South Sudan’s commitment to international peace, regional stability, and progressive cooperation.”

Hon. Malual’s appointment comes at a time when South Sudan is seeking to rebuild its image globally, recover from years of conflict, and attract development support. His diplomatic outreach aligns with a broader foreign policy shift emphasized by the President in recent months—aimed at consolidating peace dividends and diversifying international alliances.

The Deputy Minister is expected to continue his meetings throughout the month, culminating in a briefing to the Council of Ministers on progress and outcomes.
