New ICT Leaders Vow to Fast-Track South Sudan’s Digital Economy Transformation

JUBA, MAY 13, 2025 – South Sudan’s newly appointed ICT leaders have pledged to make the digital economy a top priority as they officially assumed office on Tuesday.

Eng. Thomas Gatkuoth Nyak, the new Undersecretary for Telecommunications, and Gieth Kon Mathiang, the incoming Director General of the National Communication Authority (NCA), were welcomed by Minister of Information, Communication Technology and Postal Services Michael Makuei Lueth and his Deputy David Yauyau Jankuchi.

In his inaugural address, Undersecretary Nyak emphasized his commitment to delivering the fastest internet speeds in the region. He also outlined his ambition to integrate artificial intelligence into the national ICT framework to bridge digital divides and position South Sudan on the global digital map.

“Our goal is to lead the region in digital connectivity, AI deployment, and innovation that empowers citizens and drives economic growth,” Nyak said.

Echoing the focus on continuity and growth, NCA’s new Director General Gieth Kon Mathiang reassured stakeholders that he would build on the foundation laid by his predecessor, Napoleon Adok Gai.

“I’m not here to undo what has been done. I’m here to strengthen the corporate structure of the NCA and ensure we are a key player in South Sudan’s economic transformation,” Mathiang stated.

The two ICT officials replace Dr. Lado Wani Kenyi and Napoleon Adok Gai, both of whom played instrumental roles in laying the groundwork for South Sudan’s ongoing digital shift.

As South Sudan accelerates its journey toward a digital economy, the appointments of Nyak and Mathiang come at a crucial time when regional competitiveness, tech innovation, and infrastructure investment are essential for national progress.
