SPLA-IO Stands Against Foreign Interference
Unlike SPLM-IG, SPLA-IO does not collaborate with foreign powers such as Uganda 🇺🇬 or Eritrea 🇪🇷 to suppress its own people or sabotage the country’s economy. Many view this independence as a sign of true patriotism and loyalty to the sovereignty of South Sudan 🇸🇸.
It Defends National Integrity
SPLA-IO is widely seen as more patriotic and protective of South Sudan’s territorial integrity. Supporters believe that, unlike SPLM-IG—under which some leaders are accused of secretly compromising parts of the country’s land—SPLA-IO would never sell out or negotiate away any part of South Sudan.
It Champions Marginalized Communities
SPLA-IO has shown a commitment to uplifting historically underrepresented groups such as the Maban, Peri, Toposa, and other ethnic communities in Equatoria, Barh el Ghazal, and the Upper Nile. Many citizens who have suffered under the Dinka-majority leadership of SPLM-IG see SPLA-IO as a more inclusive and representative political force.
It Promotes Modern, Educated Leadership
Unlike SPLM-IG, which has been criticized for being dominated by unqualified elites with low education levels and outdated, tribalistic mindsets, SPLA-IO supports educated, young, and modern leaders. Its vision aligns more with professional governance and civic responsibility. Critics also point out that SPLM-IG leadership is often associated with unethical behavior, including the exploitation of younger girls and widespread corruption.
It Advocates for the Rights of Equatoria and Upper Nile
SPLA-IO has consistently pushed for the political and economic rights of the people of Equatoria and the Upper Nile. However, some groups—particularly from Dinka Bor and parts of Dinka Upper Nile—have misinterpreted its mission, viewing it through a tribal lens rather than as a national call for justice and equality.
