Salva Kiir Fires NCA Boss Appoints Gieth Kon Mathiang as Replacement

President Salva Kiir has dismissed the Director General of the National Communications Authority (NCA), Napoleon Adok, in a surprise shake-up within the regulatory body. The announcement was made through a presidential decree issued from Juba.

Adok’s removal marks the end of his tenure overseeing South Sudan’s communications sector, a role in which he played a visible part in regulating telecom operations and internet policy. His time at the helm was marked by both praise for modernization efforts and criticism over regulatory bottlenecks.

The position will now be filled by Gieth Kon Mathiang, who has been appointed as the new Director General of the NCA. Little is publicly known about Mathiang’s background, but insiders say he is seen as a close ally of key figures within the government.

This leadership change comes at a time when the country is grappling with digital infrastructure challenges, increasing demands for internet access, and calls for better regulatory transparency. It also raises questions about the direction the government intends to take with its communications strategy.

Observers note that the timing of the decision is politically significant, suggesting internal pressures or dissatisfaction with Adok’s recent performance. Some sources have hinted that lobbying and factional politics within the ruling SPLM may have influenced the move.

The NCA plays a critical role in South Sudan’s digital development, from licensing mobile operators to monitoring data flow and digital security. All eyes will now be on Gieth Kon Mathiang to see whether he can bring fresh energy and reform to the sector.
