A Government At War With Its Own Citizens: Bombing Old Fangak is a War Crime

On May 3, 2025, the world bore witness to another horror in South Sudan as a Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) health facility in Old Fangak, Jonglei State, was bombed—allegedly by the South Sudanese military. This facility, a lifeline for thousands, was turned into rubble, killing patients and medical workers. The act was a violation of every principle of International Humanitarian Law.

Why was Old Fangak—a historically Nuer region—targeted? This is not the first time such acts have been committed against Nuer communities. It fits into a larger pattern of dehumanization and militarization against the Nuer people. Bombing a hospital is not collateral damage—it is a declaration that the lives of the Nuer are dispensable.

Where is the outrage from the world? The African Union condemned the act, but statements are not enough. If such an attack had happened in Europe or North America, international action would have been swift and unforgiving. The silence surrounding South Sudan speaks volumes.

The bombing of Old Fangak is a war crime. It must be prosecuted as such. We demand immediate international investigations, reparations for the victims, and an end to aerial campaigns in civilian zones.

To the Nuer people: your pain is real, your anger is justified, and your voice must be louder than their bombs.
