SPLM Leadership Removed Kuol Manyang, Daniel Awet – Appoints Mary Apai and Simon Kun

Juba, South Sudan – In a major political reshuffle within the ruling Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM), they removed long-serving party veterans Kuol Manyang Juuk and Daniel Awet Akot from their positions as Second and Third Deputy Chairpersons, respectively.

In their place, Kiir has appointed Mary Apai and Simon Kun Puoch, signaling a generational and strategic shift in the SPLM’s leadership structure.

This decision follows closely on the heels of Benjamin Bol Mel’s appointment as First Deputy Chairman, a move widely interpreted as a step toward preparing the next line of leadership amid growing uncertainty surrounding President Kiir’s health and the country’s political future.

A Bold Reorganization

Both Kuol Manyang and Daniel Awet are respected SPLM historical figures who played significant roles in the liberation struggle and post-independence politics. However, their removal is seen as part of a broader effort by Kiir to inject new energy into the party and reposition the SPLM for future political battles.

The appointment of Mary Apai, a rising female political voice, and Simon Kun Puoch, a former governor of Upper Nile and experienced diplomat, reflects an attempt to diversify and modernize the SPLM leadership, possibly to appeal to youth, women, and marginalized regions.

Political Implications

This leadership reshuffle may strengthen Benjamin Bol Mel’s position within the SPLM as the top contender to succeed Kiir. It could also reshape alliances and internal dynamics, especially as South Sudan prepares for an inevitable transition.

“This is not just about removing the old guard — it’s about who controls the future of the SPLM,” said a political analyst in Juba. “And with the new appointments, the roadmap is becoming clearer.”

The SPLM is expected to make an official announcement in the coming days outlining the new responsibilities of its restructured leadership.
