“This Is the Red Line”: Gen. Akech Tong Aleu Declares War on Corruption in South Sudan’s Security Bureau

JUBA, South Sudan – In a bold and symbolic declaration, Gen. Akech Tong Aleu, the newly appointed Director General of the Internal Security Bureau (ISB) under the National Security Service (NSS), has drawn a “red line” against corruption, nepotism, and political interference.

Speaking at his reception at the National Security Service (NSS) Headquarters in Juba on Tuesday, Gen. Akech emphasized the importance of integrity within the institution. He warned against interference in his position, particularly from family members and those seeking political favors.

A Clear Stand Against Corruption

In his address, Gen. Akech laid down a strong message:

“From today onward, the malpractices of corruption that are taking place in this country must stop. See me where I stand, I stand in the red line. And this is the red line between you and my position,” he said.

He specifically warned family members and potential relatives among the officers not to approach him through familial ties for favors, stressing that his role is professional and that there are no exceptions when it comes to ethical conduct.

“I have relatives among you, but I don’t want anyone to see me as a relative at the place of duty. Even my sons are among you, but this is a red line,” he added.

Acknowledging the Work of Predecessors

Despite his strong stance against corruption, Gen. Akech took a moment to appreciate the contributions of his predecessor, Gen. Akol Koor Kuc, who he credited with expanding security services and improving the overall stability of the country.

“Akol worked hard and expanded the security. I give him appreciation for that. We must all respect him,” said Akech.

Gen. Akech’s Political and Military Career

Gen. Akech’s career in public service spans over a decade. He began as the commissioner of Tonj South County in Warrap State in 2012, before moving on to serve as the Deputy Governor of Warrap and later Caretaker Governor of the state. Following the creation of 28 states in 2015, he became the first Governor of the newly established Tonj State.

Akech’s leadership roles continued with his appointment as the Minister of Cabinet Affairs in Warrap State, followed by his position as Undersecretary for Veteran Affairs at the Ministry of Defense and Veterans Affairs in 2024.

Now, as Director General of the ISB, Gen. Akech faces the monumental task of tackling corruption within one of the most sensitive sectors of South Sudan’s security apparatus.

Tackling Systemic Corruption

The issue of systemic corruption in South Sudan’s public sector has long been a source of public dissatisfaction. Gen. Akech’s tough stance on the issue comes amid growing concerns over how corruption erodes trust in government institutions and negatively affects public sector outcomes.

As the new spy chief, Akech’s success in fighting corruption could significantly impact his legacy, especially in a country where political rivalries and corruption are deeply entrenched.

“The fight against corruption is not an easy one, but I am committed to making sure it does not damage the legacy I fought for to liberate this country,” Gen. Akech concluded.

President Salva Kiir has also previously acknowledged the urgent need to curb corruption and the mismanagement of funds, making Gen. Akech’s approach a pivotal moment for the country’s internal security reforms.
