Yoanyang, Unity State — Sunday, May 11, 2025
Addressing a large gathering at the Diocese of Bentiu’s centennial event, Governor Riek Bim Top emphasized the importance of translating faith into action.
“Let this celebration not only be a commemoration of the past but a call to action for the future,” he declared. “Let us, as government, the Church, citizens, and leaders, commit ourselves to serving our people, uplifting the vulnerable, and promoting peace and unity. We are entering a new era of strong faith, forgiveness, and development.”
The celebration marks 100 years since the planting of Christian faith in Yoanyang by the then Western Upper Nile Catholic Mission, a milestone seen as the spiritual genesis of the region. The Governor described the centenary as “the seedling of faith that has grown into a tree of unity, hope, and endurance.”
The historic event drew dignitaries from across the country, including the Vice President of the Republic of South Sudan, Gen. Taban Deng Gai, members of the Transitional National Legislative Assembly (TNLA), state government officials, and a massive turnout from the people of Rubkona Administrative Area (RAA).
The Yoanyang centenary now stands as a pivotal moment in Unity State’s journey — a reminder of shared heritage and a rallying point for faith-driven development and reconciliation.
