The Political Lynching of Dr. Riek Machar: A Blow to Peace and Democracy

The recent detention of Dr. Riek Machar and the subsequent creation of an interim SPLM-IO leadership represent a blatant political coup orchestrated to dismantle the fragile peace established by the 2018 Revitalized Agreement. Let’s call it what it is: the erasure of a Nuer leader through political maneuvering backed by state machinery.

Professor Peter Adwok Nyaba’s remarks were spot on—this was engineered from outside the SPLM-IO, with intentions to break one of the few remaining pillars of the agreement. Installing Stephen Par Kuol as interim leader while Machar is under house arrest is not just unconstitutional; it is a move to dismantle opposition and fracture the Nuer voice.

The international community, especially IGAD and the African Union, must recognize this for what it is: a dangerous regression. Machar’s name is inscribed in the peace agreement as First Vice President. You cannot remove him without dismantling the entire framework of peace.

The SPLM-IO split is not just a party affair—it is an ethnic purge disguised as political reform. The Nuer will not accept the silencing of their leaders. South Sudan must choose: peace or provocation.
